In studies, a few different dosing guidelines have been tried for weight loss. However, the best 5-hydroxytryptophan dose (that is both safe and effective) is not known at this time.

Drug Interactions With 5-Hydroxytryptophan

5-hydroxytryptophan may potentially interact with other supplements or medications (see Drug Interactions With 5-Hydroxytryptophan).
 

Is It Safe?

5-hydroxytryptophan may not be safe, although this is a controversial issue. Some people may be more likely to experience problems due to 5-hydroxytryptophan. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking this supplement if you have:
 
  • Down syndrome
  • Any other chronic disease or health problem
  • Any allergies, including allergies to medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives.

Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
