Who Should Not Use Apri?

You should not use Apri if you:
 
  • Are allergic to Desogen, desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol, or any of the inactive components used to make the contraceptive. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive components in Apri.
  • Have a history of breast cancer or endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus).
  • Have undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding.
  • Get headaches with neurological symptoms (such as migraines with aura).
  • Have diabetes that has affected your eyes, kidneys, or blood vessels.
  • Have severely high blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Have problems with your heart valves.
  • Have a blood clotting disorder (that causes you to clot too easily) or have ever had a blood clot.
  • Have heart disease.
  • Have had a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA or mini-stroke).
  • Have an upcoming, major surgery that will require you to be immobilized for several days.
  • Have had yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice) during a prior pregnancy or oral contraceptive use.
  • Have liver tumors.
  • Are pregnant (or think you might be pregnant).

Precautions and Warnings With Apri: Final Thoughts

There are a number of situations in which Apri should not be used, along with several precautions and warnings people should be aware of before using this form of contraception. However, it is possible that not all of the warnings or precautions were discussed in this article. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider about the specific Apri warnings and precautions that may apply to you.
