Drug Interactions With Azurette

If antibiotics, barbiturates, cyclosporine, or St. John's wort are taken with Azurette, drug interactions can occur. As a result, Azurette may not be as effective at preventing pregnancy, or you may be at increased risk for various side effects. To prevent these and other problems, talk to your healthcare provider before taking any drugs with this birth control pill.

An Introduction to Azurette Interactions

Azurette™ (desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol) can potentially interact with numerous other drugs. Many of these interactions can be severe enough to cause accidental pregnancy.
(Azurette is a generic version of the brand-name birth control pill Mircette®.)
Some of the drugs that may lead to Azurette interactions include:
  • Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren®)
  • Antibiotics
  • Aprepitant (Emend®)
  • Atorvastatin (Lipitor®) or combination medications that contain atorvastatin (Caduet®, Liptruzet™)
  • Barbiturate medications, such as:
    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
