Beyaz and Pregnancy

As with other birth control pills, it is not recommended for pregnant women to take Beyaz (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol/levomefolate calcium). In studies of pregnant animals, one of the hormones in this medication was shown to increase the risk of problems such as miscarriage. However, it is unlikely to cause serious problems if a woman accidentally uses it during early pregnancy.

Can Pregnant Women Take Beyaz?

Beyaz™ (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol/levomefolate calcium) is a prescription oral contraceptive, also known as a birth control pill. As with all oral contraceptives, Beyaz should not be intentionally used during pregnancy.
Interestingly, Beyaz is the first birth control pill to include folate, a B vitamin. Since no form of birth control (including Beyaz) is 100 percent effective (other than abstinence, of course), some women will get pregnant while taking it. The folate in Beyaz helps to prevent birth defects.

What Is Pregnancy Category X?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category X is given to medications that should not be used during pregnancy. Often, this is due to serious problems that could potentially occur, such as birth defects or miscarriages.
Even though it is a pregnancy Category X medication, Beyaz is not likely to cause any problems if accidentally used during early pregnancy. In animal studies, drospirenone (one of the hormones in Beyaz) increased the risk of miscarriages and slow fetal development. When it was given to animals in late pregnancy, male offspring developed feminine characteristics, probably because drospirenone works against testosterone and other male hormones. It is not known if these problems will also occur in humans.
