Generic Demulen

What Happens at the Pharmacy?

Some people wonder what happens when their healthcare provider writes a prescription for Demulen. Typically, your pharmacist will automatically use a generic version (particularly in this case, as brand-name Demulen is no longer available).
Laws vary from state to state, but in general, pharmacists can (and usually do) switch people to generics without consulting with the healthcare provider, unless the healthcare provider specifies on the prescription that the brand-name version is medically necessary. Some states even require pharmacists to dispense generics whenever possible. The end result is that you will be given either Kelnor or Zovia (not Demulen) when you take your prescription to a pharmacy.
