Desogen Drug Interactions

If you take certain medications (such as antibiotics, barbiturates, or protease inhibitors) while using Desogen, drug interactions may occur. Some of these drug interactions can not only reduce the effectiveness of Desogen and increase your risk of pregnancy, but you may also have a higher risk of developing certain side effects. To avoid these problems, make sure to talk to your healthcare provider about potential interactions with Desogen that may apply to you.

An Introduction to Desogen Drug Interactions

Desogen® (desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol) can potentially interact with several other medicines. Many of these interactions can be severe enough to cause accidental pregnancy, and a backup method of birth control may be recommended to avoid pregnancy. Some of the medicines that may lead to Desogen interactions include:
 

 

    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)

 

  • Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
  • Many seizure medications, such as:

 

 

 

 

(Desogen is equivalent to Apri®, Ortho-Cept®, Reclipsen™, and Solia™ birth control pills. The information in this article also applies to each of these medications.)
