Dinoprostone Vaginal Gel Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Dinoprostone vaginal gel has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of women given the drug were documented and then compared to those that occurred in a similar group of women given a placebo (a vaginal gel that did not contain any active ingredients) or no treatment.
In these studies, the most common dinoprostone vaginal gel side effects included:
  • Fetal distress (an abnormal fetal heart rate) -- in up to 17 percent of women
  • Abnormal uterine contractions -- up to 6.6 percent
  • Any stomach or intestinal side effect (such as vomiting or diarrhea) -- up to 5.7 percent
  • A variable fetal heart rate -- up to 4.3 percent
  • Low fetal heart rate -- up to 4.1 percent
  • Back pain -- up to 3.1 percent
  • Warm feeling in the vagina -- up to 1.5 percent
  • Fever -- up to 1.4 percent.

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the dinoprostone vaginal gel side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.
Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while receiving dinoprostone vaginal gel or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to the medication, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
