Dinoprostone Vaginal Gel Side Effects

Clinical studies have shown that fetal distress, abnormal uterine contractions, and back pain are some of the most commonly reported side effects of dinoprostone vaginal gel. Although some people may tolerate this medication without reactions, serious problems could occur. Let your healthcare provider know right away if you develop reactions such as abnormally strong contractions, severe uterine pain, or excessive vaginal bleeding.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Dinoprostone Vaginal Gel

Just like any medicine, dinoprostone vaginal gel (Prepidil®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who receives the drug will have problems. In fact, most women tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Dinoprostone Vaginal Gel Side Effects

Some side effects of dinoprostone vaginal gel are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Abnormally strong or frequent uterine contractions
  • Severe uterine pain (lower abdominal pain or pelvic pain)
  • Abnormal, excessive, or persistent vaginal bleeding
  • Persistent fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal (stomach) pain, or diarrhea.
