Ella Side Effects

Serious Side Effects

Some side effects with ella, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
    • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Vomiting within three hours of taking an ella tablet (you may have vomited up the tablet). Your healthcare provider may prescribe you another dose to take.
  • Signs of an ectopic pregnancy (a "tubal" pregnancy), such as severe lower abdominal pain (stomach pain).
It should be noted that these side effects rarely occurred in clinical studies, and there is a good chance that they are completely unrelated to ella.

Other Uncommon Ella Side Effects

Acne is another ella side effect that has been reported since ella has been on the market. Because acne reports have not been seen in clinical trials, it can be difficult to determine the actual frequency of this side effect. It is also hard to tell whether this side effect is actually caused by the medication itself or by something else.

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.
Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking the contraceptive or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to ella, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
