Drug Interactions With Enpresse
Since many medications can cause drug interactions with Enpresse, make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medicines you are taking before starting the birth control pill. When medications such as protease inhibitors, aminoglutethimide, or antibiotics are taken together with Enpresse, drug interactions could occur that may increase your risk of side effects or unintentional pregnancy.
Enpresse® (levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol) is a generic version of Triphasil®. It can potentially interact with numerous other medicines. Many of these interactions can be severe enough to lead to unintentional pregnancy. In these instances, a backup method of birth control may be required. If you do not know what to do about any particular Enpresse drug interaction, be sure to use backup birth control until you can check with your healthcare provider, just to be safe. Some of the medicines that may lead to Enpresse interactions include:
- Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren®)
- Antibiotics
- Aprepitant (Emend®)
- Barbiturates, including (but not limited to):
- Amobarbital (Amytal®)
- Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
- Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
- Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
- Secobarbital (Seconal®)
- Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
- Many seizure medications, such as:
- Carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Epitol®, Equetro™, Tegretol®)
- Felbamate (Felbatol®)
- Lamotrigine (Lamictal®)
- Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®)
- Phenytoin (Dilantin®, Phenytek®)
- Topiramate (Topamax®)
- Amprenavir (Agenerase®)
- Atazanavir (Reyataz®)
- Fosamprenavir (Lexiva®)
- Indinavir (Crixivan®)
- Nelfinavir (Viracept®)
- Ritonavir (Norvir®)
- Selegiline (Eldepryl®, Emsam®, Zelapar®)
- St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum).
