Generic Femcon Fe

There are currently no versions of generic Femcon Fe available in the United States because the contraceptive is protected by patents. The first patent is set to expire in April 2019; however, lawsuits or patents for other uses may delay this. Once the patent expires, several companies may begin manufacturing a generic Femcon Fe product.

Is Generic Femcon Fe Available?

Femcon™ Fe (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) is a prescription medication. It is one of the many oral contraceptives (birth control pills) available. However, Femcon Fe is the only chewable birth control pill currently on the market. It is especially useful for women who have difficulty swallowing tablets. Femcon Fe tablets may be chewed or swallowed whole.

Femcon Fe is made by Warner Chilcott Company, Inc. It is currently under the protection of patents that prevent any generic Femcon Fe from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will Generic Femcon Fe Be Available?

The first patent for Femcon Fe currently expires in April 2019. However, Warner Chilcott has an agreement with Watson Pharmaceuticals that will permit Watson to make a generic version as early as January 2013. This agreement is the result of a lawsuit between the two companies.

Does Insurance Cover Femcon Fe?

Each insurance company is different. There has been a long history of insurance companies not covering contraceptive products, although this is beginning to change. Because Femcon Fe is not available in generic form, you may have to pay a higher copayment if your insurance company covers it, although coverage and copayments vary widely.
