How to Heal and Prevent Cavities with DIY Remineralizing Toothpaste

Remineralizing Toothpaste Recipes

There are many different variations, but most do-it-yourself (DIY) remineralizing toothpaste recipes are similar to this one:
 
  • Oil (such as coconut oil, sesame oil, or cod liver oil)
  • Calcium magnesium powder (found in health food stores)
  • Baking soda
  • Xylitol or stevia (for sweetness)
  • Mint or other essential oil for flavor.
 
Some recipes also call for bentonite clay, sea salt, or other such sources of trace minerals. It should be noted that studies suggest that xylitol, in addition to providing sweetness (and balancing the saltiness of baking soda) can help prevent tooth decay.
 
Of course, we recommend that you talk with your dentist before embarking on your remineralization journey. If your dentist doesn't succeed in talking you out of it, at least he or she can help you document your progression or regression. Otherwise, how would you know if it were really working? Yes, your teeth might feel cleaner or look whiter, but these effects don't necessarily translate into remineralization or cavity prevention.
