Talk with your healthcare provider prior to using hydroxyprogesterone caproate if you have:
- Seizures or epilepsy
- Depression
- A history of blood clots
- Cancer (or if you have had cancer in the past)
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Preeclampsia
- Migraines
- Diabetes
- Asthma
- Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
- Heart disease
- Liver disease, such as liver failure, cirrhosis, hepatitis, or liver tumors
- Cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding unrelated to pregnancy
- Any allergies, including to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are breastfeeding (see Makena and Breastfeeding).
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

The manufacturer of this medication is committed to helping women afford it. The company will work with you, your insurance, available state assistance programs (such as Medicaid), and any other options to help you afford hydroxyprogesterone caproate.
They will help you obtain prior authorization with your insurance company, if necessary. They can also provide financial assistance for eligible women. This process is started automatically when your healthcare provider prescribes hydroxyprogesterone caproate and registers you with the Makena Care Connection™, which is required to receive the medication.
