LaViv

If you are bothered by the appearance of smile lines, your healthcare provider may recommend a treatment called LaViv. This medication is grown in a special laboratory, using your own cells. Your healthcare provider will administer the drug in three separate treatment sessions, about three to six weeks apart. Common side effects include redness, pain, and swelling.

What Is LaViv?

LaViv™ (azficel-T) is a unique, personalized cell therapy approved to improve the appearance of smile lines. It is specifically made for you, using your own cells obtained from a skin biopsy. The biopsy tissue is sent away to a special laboratory that grows more of your own cells. The final product, which contains over 98 percent fibroblasts, the cells that are responsible for creating collagen, is shipped back to your healthcare provider's office, where it is injected into the smile lines.

Who Makes This Product?

LaViv is manufactured by Fibrocell Technologies, Inc.

How Does LaViv Work?

At this point, it is not entirely clear how LaViv works. Since it contains mostly fibroblasts, at least theoretically, it makes sense that LaViv works by increasing collagen production since fibroblasts are responsible for making collagen.

Clinical Effects

In studies, people were given either LaViv or a placebo (injections that contained the inactive ingredients, without any cells). In one study, 57 percent of people that received LaViv injections reported a noticeable improvement (at least 2 points on a 5-point scale), compared to just 30 percent of people who received the placebo injections.
