What Is Liothyronine Used For?

Liothyronine Use in Children

Liothyronine is approved to treat thyroid problems in children and infants. Talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using the drug in children.

Is Liothyronine Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend liothyronine for something other than the conditions discussed in this article. Sometimes, the drug is used in an off-label fashion in conjunction with antidepressants to treat depression (particularly depression that has been resistant to other treatments).
It is important to note that liothyronine should not be used as a weight loss medication in people without thyroid problems. Normal liothyronine doses are unlikely to cause significant weight loss; weight loss is only seen at doses high enough to cause serious side effects of liothyronine. Also, liothyronine should not be used to treat infertility, unless it is related to a thyroid problem.
