Strengths of Generic Loestrin Fe

Just like brand-name Loestrin Fe, generic Loestrin Fe is available in the following strengths:
 
 
    • First 21 tablets -- 1 mg of norethindrone and 0.02 mg (20 mcg) of ethinyl estradiol
    • Last 7 tablets -- 75 mg ferrous fumarate (iron)
 
  • Junel Fe 1.5/30 (or Microgestin Fe 1.5/30) -- Contains 28 tablets in each pack, with the following ingredients:
 
    • First 21 tablets -- 1.4 mg of norethindrone and 0.03 mg (30 mcg) of ethinyl estradiol
    • Last 7 tablets -- 75 mg of ferrous fumarate (iron).
 

Are Generics as Good as Loestrin Fe?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. Junel Fe and Microgestin Fe both have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Loestrin Fe.
 
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients, which could cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
