Generic Lysteda

You can find generic Lysteda (tranexamic acid) in one strength: 650 mg. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has assigned an "AB" rating to the generic version of the drug, which means that it is considered equivalent to brand-name Lysteda. However, it may have different inactive ingredients.

Can I Buy Generic Lysteda?

Lysteda™ (oral tranexamic acid) is a prescription medication approved to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. It is the first nonhormonal medication approved for this use.
Brand-name Lysteda is made by Mikart, Inc., for Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Inc. However, the drug is also available in generic form.

Availability of Generic Lysteda

Generic Lysteda is available in one strength: Tranexamic acid 650 mg tablets. It is made by manufacturers such as:
  • Prasco Laboratories
  • Watson Laboratories, Inc.
The version sold by Prasco is actually an “authorized generic,” meaning that it is the real, brand-name medication that is just packaged and sold under a generic name. It is exactly the same as Lysteda in every way (it is even made by Mikart, Inc.), except it comes in a bottle with a generic name.

Is Generic Tranexamic Acid as Good as Lysteda?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An “AB” rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic Lysteda versions currently available have an “AB” rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Lysteda.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
