Lysteda and Breastfeeding

Is Taking Lysteda While Breastfeeding Safe?

Lysteda™ (oral tranexamic acid) passes through breast milk. The manufacturer recommends that breastfeeding women take this drug only if the benefits clearly outweigh the possible risks. If you are breastfeeding a child, talk with your healthcare provider before taking Lysteda.

More Information on Breastfeeding and Lysteda

Although it is clear that Lysteda passes through breast milk, it is unclear if the small amount that a breastfeeding child would ingest through breast milk would be significant enough to cause any problems, such as an increased risk for blood clots.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss Lysteda and breastfeeding with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
