Women Home > Estradiol Valerate

Estradiol valerate is a hormone replacement medication often used for treating menopausal symptoms, hormone deficiencies, and prostate cancer. This prescription drug comes in an injectable form and is generally administered once a month. Most people tolerate it well, but side effects can include headaches, nausea, and stomach pain.

What Is Estradiol Valerate?

Estradiol valerate (Delestrogen®) is a prescription hormone replacement medication that contains estrogen. It comes in the form of a long-acting injection that is injected into a muscle, usually once a month. Estradiol valerate is approved for the following uses:
  • Treating menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, or vaginal symptoms
  • Replacing hormones in younger women whose ovaries do not produce enough estrogen (or who have had their ovaries removed)
  • Reducing the symptoms of advanced prostate cancer.

Are There Side Effects?

As with any medicine, estradiol valerate can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.
If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
Common side effects of estrogen medications (such as estradiol valerate) include, but are not limited to:
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Breast pain
  • Headaches
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain)
  • Vaginal bleeding.
