Estropipate is a hormone replacement drug often used for treating menopausal symptoms. It is also approved for preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and treating hormone deficiency in younger women whose ovaries do not produce enough estrogen. The medication comes in tablet form and is available by prescription only. Side effects can include abdominal pain, nausea, and headaches.

What Is Estropipate?

Estropipate (Ogen®) is a prescription hormone replacement medication. It is approved for the following uses:
  • Treating menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, or vaginal dryness
  • Preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
  • Replacing hormones in younger women whose ovaries do not produce enough estrogen or who have had their ovaries removed.
This article refers to estropipate tablets. Estropipate also comes as a vaginal cream (see Estropipate Vaginal Cream for more information). This form is approved only for the vaginal symptoms of menopause.

Possible Side Effects

Just like any medicine, estropipate can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
Common reactions to estropipate include but are not limited to:
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Breast pain
  • Headaches
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain)
  • Vaginal bleeding.
