Women Home > Macrodantin Dosage
When treating bladder infections in children, Macrodantin is typically taken four times a day -- how much medicine is in each dose will depend on the child's weight. For adults who are taking this antibiotic to treat a bladder infection, the recommended dosage of Macrodantin is 50 to 100 mg four times daily, continued for at least three days after the infection has cleared.
An Introduction to Dosing With MacrodantinThe dose of Macrodantin® (nitrofurantoin macrocrystalline) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on various factors, such as:
- Your age
- Your weight (for children)
- Whether you are taking this medication to treat or to prevent bladder infections.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Macrodantin Dosage for AdultsThe recommended Macrodantin dose for treating urinary tract infections in adults is 50 to 100 mg four times daily, continued for at least three days after the infection has cleared. For uncomplicated infections, the lower amount is usually recommended. For long-term treatment to prevent UTIs in adults, often a dose of just 50 or 100 mg once daily at bedtime is sufficient.
Dosing for Children
The recommended Macrodantin dose for treating urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children (age one month and older) is based on body weight. As a result, it is best if your child's healthcare provider weighs your child in order to determine an accurate dosage, especially if your child has not been weighed recently.
For treating bladder infections, Macrodantin is usually given four times a day. To prevent bladder infections in children, the medication is usually given once or twice a day.
The liquid form of nitrofurantoin (Furadantin®) may be more appropriate for younger children, who often have trouble swallowing capsules.
