Metronidazole vaginal gel is prescribed when a woman has an overgrowth of certain bacteria that has resulted in bacterial vaginosis. It comes as a gel that is applied once or twice a day for five days. As an antibiotic, metronidazole vaginal gel kills certain bacteria to help restore a normal and healthy balance of bacteria. This medicine may cause vaginal irritation or discharge.
What Is Metronidazole Vaginal Gel?Metronidazole vaginal gel (MetroGel-Vaginal®) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV), a condition involving an overgrowth of certain types of vaginal bacteria. It comes as a gel that is applied once or twice daily. Metronidazole vaginal gel should not be confused with regular Metrogel®, a skin product used to treat rosacea.
Are There Side Effects?Just like any medicine, metronidazole vaginal gel may cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the drug will experience problems. In fact, most women tolerate it quite well.
