Women Home > Generic Plan B

At this time, generic versions of original Plan B are available in both prescription and nonprescription form. They are sold under the name Next Choice. Plan B One-Step is also available in generic form.

Is Generic Plan B Available?

Plan B® (levonorgestrel) is an emergency contraceptive, a "morning-after pill." It is approved to prevent pregnancy when used within 72 hours (three days) after unprotected sex.
In the past, Plan B came in a two-step regimen, which consisted of two tablets that were taken 12 hours apart. However, this product was discontinued and was replaced by the new Plan B One-Step™, which consists of one tablet.
Brand-name Plan B One-Step is available to all women (regardless of age) without a prescription. There are still age restrictions for the generic versions of both the one-step and two-step products, though (they cannot be sold to women under the age of 17). This is because the manufacturer of Plan B One-Step was granted the exclusive rights to market its product to people under age 17 until April 2016.
Plan B is made by Gedeon Richter, Ltd., for Duramed Pharmaceutical, Inc., a division of Barr Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (now owned by Teva Women's Health, Inc). Generic versions of the prescription and nonprescription versions of original (two-step) Plan B are available. Also, generic versions of the prescription and nonprescription Plan B One-Step are available.

Prescription-Only Generic Plan B

Watson Laboratories, Inc., makes a generic version of prescription-only and nonprescription original Plan B and Plan B One-Step. It is sold under the name Next Choice® (for the two-step version) or Next Choice ONE DOSE (for the one-step version). Perrigo makes another generic version that is sold under the name Levonorgestrel.
