Other Forms of Generic Nitrofurantoin

Care must be taken to avoid confusing generic Macrodantin with generic Macrobid® (nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystalline), a similar medication that is taken just twice a day. The generic names are quite similar and are often abbreviated in order to fit on prescription labels.
While most pharmacists are aware of this potential problem and are careful to avoid confusing the two, it is a good idea to check with your pharmacist if your generic Macrodantin looks different from what you have received before.
