Just like any medicine, medroxyprogesterone intramuscular injection (Depo-Provera®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Medroxyprogesterone Intramuscular Injection Side Effects

Some side effects of medroxyprogesterone intramuscular injection are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
    • Vision or speech changes
    • Weakness or numbness in an arm or leg
    • A severe headache
  • Signs of a blood clot in the lung, such as:
    • Shortness of breath
    • Sudden chest pain
    • Coughing up blood
  • Signs of a blood clot in the leg, such as severe pain or swelling of the calf
  • Severe abdominal (stomach) pain
  • Signs of liver damage, such as:
    • Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
    • Dark urine
    • Upper-right abdominal (stomach) pain
  • Seizures
  • Depression
  • Persistent abnormal menstrual periods or heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Injection site reactions, such as severe or persistent pain, pus, or bleeding
  • A change in blood glucose levels, especially if you have diabetes
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
