Just like any medicine, medroxyprogesterone intramuscular injection (Depo-Provera^®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. Serious Medroxyprogesterone Intramuscular Injection Side Effects

Some side effects of medroxyprogesterone intramuscular injection are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider.

These include but are not limited to:

Loss of bone density, which could lead to osteoporosis
Sudden vision loss or vision changes, which could be signs of a blood clot in the eye
Migraines
Signs of a stroke, such as:

Vision or speech changes
Weakness or numbness in an arm or leg
A severe headache

Signs of a blood clot in the lung, such as:

Shortness of breath
Sudden chest pain
Coughing up blood

Signs of a blood clot in the leg, such as severe pain or swelling of the calf
Severe abdominal (stomach) pain
Signs of liver damage, such as:

Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
Dark urine
Upper-right abdominal (stomach) pain

Seizures
Depression
Persistent abnormal menstrual periods or heavy vaginal bleeding
Injection site reactions, such as severe or persistent pain, pus, or bleeding
A change in blood glucose levels, especially if you have diabetes
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:

An unexplained rash
Hives
Itching
Unexplained swelling
Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
