Drug Interactions With Metronidazole Vaginal Gel

Amprenavir
Combining metronidazole (the active ingredient of the vaginal gel) with amprenavir oral solution (but not the other forms of amprenavir) could cause a dangerous interaction. However, it is unclear if this interaction applies to the vaginal formulation, as only a small amount of the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. Check with your healthcare provider before using these drugs together.
Disulfiram
Combining metronidazole and disulfiram can cause psychosis, such as hallucinations. However, it is unclear if this interaction applies to metronidazole vaginal gel, as only a small amount of the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. Check with your healthcare provider before using these medications together.
For oral forms of metronidazole, the standard advice is to avoid this drug if you have taken disulfiram within the past two weeks.
Eplerenone
Metronidazole can increase the level of eplerenone in your blood, perhaps increasing your risk for side effects. However, it is unclear if this interaction applies to metronidazole vaginal gel, as only a small amount of the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. Check with your healthcare provider before using these drugs together.
Lithium
Metronidazole can increase the level of lithium in your blood, increasing your risk for lithium toxicity. However, it is unclear if this interaction applies to metronidazole vaginal gel, as only a small amount of the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. Check with your healthcare provider before using these medications together.
Your healthcare provider might decide to measure the level of lithium in your blood a few days after you start using metronidazole vaginal gel, as your dosage may need to be adjusted.
