What Does Metronidazole Vaginal Gel Treat?

Women age 18 and older may receive metronidazole vaginal gel (MetroGel-Vaginal®). But what does this medicine treat?

Metronidazole vaginal gel is prescribed to treat a certain condition called bacterial vaginosis (BV). This condition occurs when the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of certain bacteria. This condition can cause symptoms such as:

  • Discharge
  • Odor
  • Burning.

As an antibiotic, metronidazole vaginal gel works to treat bacterial vaginosis by killing certain types of bacteria. This allows the normal vaginal "flora" (the bacteria that reside in the vagina) to return to a more normal and healthy balance.
