How Does This Medication Work?

This medication contains metronidazole, an antibiotic that kills certain types of bacteria, including those that usually cause bacterial vaginosis. This allows the normal vaginal "flora" (the bacteria that reside in the vagina) to return to a more normal and healthy balance.

Can Children Use Metronidazole Vaginal Gel?

Metronidazole vaginal gel is not approved for children or adolescents, as it has not been adequately studied in people younger than 18 years old. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using this medicine in children.

Is Metronidazole Vaginal Gel Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, healthcare providers may recommend medications for something other than the approved uses. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are no well-accepted off-label uses for metronidazole vaginal gel.
