Nestabs DHA and Breastfeeding

It is not uncommon for a healthcare provider to advise women to continue taking their prenatal vitamin, such as Nestabs DHA, while breastfeeding. These vitamins contain important nutrients and minerals that pass through breast milk to the nursing infant. You may also need to take a calcium supplement in addition to Nestabs DHA while you are nursing.

I'm Breastfeeding -- Can I Take Nestabs DHA?

Nestabs® DHA is considered safe for use by breastfeeding women. In fact, prenatal vitamins, including Nestabs DHA, are often recommended for use while a woman is nursing.

More Information About Breastfeeding and Nestabs DHA

Breastfeeding is a time of increased nutritional need. However, it can be difficult for a breastfeeding mother to obtain all of the nutrients necessary to stay healthy through diet alone.
In addition, breast milk is the only source of vitamins and minerals for infants who are exclusively breastfed. The vitamin and mineral content of breast milk is largely determined by a woman's diet. Many of the vitamins and minerals found in Nestabs DHA pass through breast milk, which can help make breast milk nutrient-rich for a nursing infant.
It is not a good idea to take too much of any particular vitamin or mineral, however. So make sure you have your healthcare provider's approval before taking additional supplements, vitamins, or minerals.
One notable exception is calcium. Prenatal vitamins usually do not contain enough calcium to help most women meet the recommended daily amount of 1000 mg. Nestabs DHA contains 200 mg of calcium. Therefore, make sure to consume calcium-rich foods, such as milk and other dairy products. You may also need to take a calcium supplement in addition to your prenatal vitamin.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss this topic with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision about breastfeeding and Nestabs DHA that is right for you.
