Nestabs DHA Uses

How Does It Work?

Nestabs DHA contains a variety of different vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. These nutrients are important for a healthy pregnancy, and many pregnant women may not get enough of these nutrients for various reasons.
Probably most importantly, Nestabs DHA contains folic acid, which is important to prevent birth defects of the brain and spine (neural tube defects), such as spina bifida. Nestabs DHA also contains the following nutrients:
  • Iron -- to help prevent anemia
  • Calcium -- for healthy bones and teeth
  • Choline -- for brain development.
Also, like many newer prenatal vitamins, Nestabs DHA contains the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). There is some evidence that omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, may decrease the risk of preterm birth (having a baby prematurely) and improve fetal brain function and vision.
Fish are the main source of DHA, and the typical American diet is usually deficient in DHA. Also, because many pregnant women are instructed to limit their intake of certain fish due to the potential risks of mercury toxicity, it is likely that many pregnant women are not getting enough DHA through dietary means.

Is It Safe for Children to Use Nestabs DHA?

Prenatal vitamins should generally not be used in children, unless prescribed by a healthcare provider. Prenatal vitamins contain iron in doses that may be too high for children.

Can Older Adults Use It?

While prenatal vitamins are not likely to harm an older adult, they do not necessarily meet the nutritional needs of older adults. Prenatal vitamins are specially formulated to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant and breastfeeding women. In addition, the large iron content in some prenatal vitamins could cause constipation in older adults.
