NuvaRing Drug Interactions

When certain medications, such as barbiturates, protease inhibitors, or modafinil, are taken while using NuvaRing, negative reactions may occur. These can reduce the effectiveness of NuvaRing and increase your risk of pregnancy, but you may also develop certain side effects. Other medicines that may lead to drug interactions with NuvaRing include cyclosporine, rifamycin antibiotics, aprepitant, and certain seizure medications.

An Introduction to Interactions With NuvaRing

NuvaRing® (etonogestrel/ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring) can potentially interact with several other medicines. Some of drugs that may lead to NuvaRing interactions include:
  • Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren®)
  • Aprepitant (Emend®)
  • Barbiturates, such as:
    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
