Ovcon Dosage

The Ovcon dosing guidelines are the same for every woman. The standard Ovcon dosage is one pill taken once a day, at the same time every day. You can start the pills on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after your period starts. If you miss any Ovcon doses, it significantly increases your risk of pregnancy.

Ovcon Dosage: An Introduction

There is only one standard dose of Ovcon® (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol). As always, do not adjust your Ovcon dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so. Although birth control pills are extremely effective when taken as directed, their effectiveness decreases significantly if you take them incorrectly.

How to Take Ovcon

Starting at the beginning of the pack, take one tablet daily at the same time each day. Each pack will last for 28 days (four weeks). After you have finished one pack, immediately start a new one the next day. Do not let any days pass between packs, even if you are still having your period (this may take a little planning, as you will need a new pack on hand). The first 21 tablets contain the active ingredients (the progestin and estrogen). The last seven tablets do not contain any hormones. During this last week, your body gets a little break from the hormones, allowing you to have a period.

Starting Ovcon

When you take Ovcon for the first time, you can start it two different ways:
  • Day 1 start -- Start Ovcon on the first day of your period, within 24 hours of the start of bleeding. You will be protected from pregnancy from the start, and no backup method of birth control is needed. If your period happens to start on a Sunday, treat this as a day 1 start (rather than a Sunday start).
  • Sunday start -- Start Ovcon on the first Sunday after your period starts (even if you are still having your period). For many women, starting on Sunday may decrease their chance of having their period on the weekends (although not all women find this to be the case). You will need to use a backup method of birth control for the first seven days of the first pack.
If you choose a Sunday start, you will start every pack of Ovcon on Sundays. If you choose a day 1 start, you will start each pack on your initial start day (for instance, if you first started Ovcon on a Tuesday, you will start every pack on a Tuesday).
Some healthcare providers may suggest other ways to start Ovcon (such as starting in the middle of the cycle). Make sure to follow your healthcare provider's instructions in such situations.
