Progesterone Capsules

Progesterone capsules are used to cause periods in premenopausal women who have stopped having them. They are also useful for preventing an excessive buildup of the lining of the uterus. Progesterone capsules are taken once a day and are available in two strengths. While most women have no problems with the medication, side effects such as headaches, cramping, and breast tenderness are possible.

What Are Progesterone Capsules?

Progesterone capsules (Prometrium^®) are a prescription medication approved to:

Prevent abnormal thickening of the lining of the uterus in women taking estrogen hormone replacement therapy
Cause a period in women who stopped having menstrual periods before menopause.

Side Effects of Progesterone Capsules

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with progesterone capsules. However, not everyone who uses the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.

Common side effects of this medication include but are not limited to:

Dizziness
Abdominal pain (stomach pain) or cramping
Headaches
Breast pain or tenderness.
