Proquin XR Overdose

The effects of an overdose with Proquin XR (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride) will vary from person to person, depending on the dosage and whether the antibiotic was taken with other drugs or substances. Overdoses with similar medications have caused vomiting, headache, dizziness, and drowsiness. If the overdose was recent, the stomach may be "pumped" or medicines may be administered to induce vomiting.

Can You Take Too Much Proquin XR?

Proquin® XR (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used to treat a certain type of urinary tract infection called cystitis (more commonly known as a bladder infection). It is a fluoroquinolone ("quinolone") medication.
As with most medications, it may be possible to take too much Proquin XR. The specific effects of an overdose will likely vary, depending on a number of factors, including the Proquin XR dosage and whether it was taken with any other medications or substances.

Effects of a Proquin XR Overdose

Although it is not entirely known what to expect from an overdose with Proquin XR, effects may include those seen with overdoses of similar medications, such as:
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Disorientation
  • Slurred speech
  • Tremors
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Kidney problems.

What Are the Treatment Options?

The treatment for an overdose with Proquin XR will vary. If the overdose was recent, the healthcare provider may administer certain medicines to induce vomiting, or place a tube into the stomach to "pump" it.
Antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium may be given to bind to Proquin XR in the stomach and reduce the amount of medication absorbed into the body. Dialysis is expected to remove only a small amount.
Treatment for any type of overdose typically involves supportive care, which consists of treating the symptoms that occur as a result of the overdose. For example, supportive treatment options for a Proquin XR overdose may include:
  • Fluids through an intravenous line (IV)
  • Close monitoring of the kidneys.
It is important that you seek medical attention immediately if you believe that you or someone else may have taken too much Proquin XR.
