Proquin
® XR (
ciprofloxacin hydrochloride) is a prescription antibiotic medication. It belongs to a group of medications called fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short. Proquin XR is approved to treat a type of
urinary tract infection called cystitis (commonly known as a bladder infection).
Proquin XR is made by Depomed, Inc.
Proquin XR works by killing certain bacteria that can cause infections. It does this by interfering with two enzymes in the bacteria: topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase. These enzymes are necessary for the bacteria to copy and repair DNA, which are critical steps needed for the bacteria to multiply.
Proquin XR was shown to treat bladder infections (cystitis) as well as
Cipro® (
ciprofloxacin) in a clinical study. In this study, one group of people with bladder infections was given Proquin XR while another group was given Cipro. Up to 95 percent of people given Proquin XR were free of the bacteria causing their infection after three days, compared with up to 91 percent of people given Cipro.
