Generic Prostin E2

Although all of the patents for Prostin E2 (dinoprostone vaginal suppository) have expired, there are no generic versions of the drug available at this time. It is not clear why this is the case, although it may not be profitable for a company to make a product that is not in high demand. It is difficult to predict when, or if, a generic Prostin E2 might be made.

Can I Buy Generic Prostin E2?

Prostin E2® (dinoprostone vaginal suppository) is a prescription medication used to empty the contents of the womb (the uterus) in certain women. It comes as a suppository that is inserted vaginally.
Prostin E2 is made by Pharmacia and Upjohn Company, a division of Pfizer, Inc. This medication is not available in generic form.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

At this time, it is unknown when, or if, a generic Prostin E2 medication will be available. Prostin E2 is no longer protected by patents, so a manufacturer could make a generic version of the drug. However, no manufacturer has chosen to make a generic version at this time.
It is not entirely clear why a generic version of Prostin E2 is not available. It could be that the demand for the medication is too small to make it profitable for a company to manufacture a generic version. However, because it is unknown why a generic version is not available yet, it is impossible to predict when, or if, one might be made.

Is Dinoprostone a Generic Form of Prostin E2?

No -- dinoprostone is the active ingredient in Prostin E2, not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
