Prostin E2 Side Effects

Let your healthcare provider know right away if you receive Prostin E2 and develop potentially serious reactions to the drug, such as chest pain, severe uterine pain, or persistent vomiting. In most cases, women tolerate this medicine well, and reactions tend to be minor and easy to treat. Some of the most commonly reported Prostin E2 side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, and headaches.

An Introduction to Prostin E2 Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Prostin E2® (dinoprostone vaginal suppository) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most women tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of Prostin E2

For many medications, the prescribing information carefully explains the exact percentage of side effects that were reported during clinical trials. However, the prescribing information for almost all older medications, including Prostin E2, includes only general estimates about possible side effects, without exact percentages.
In clinical studies, the most common Prostin E2 side effects included:
  • Vomiting -- in up to 67 percent of people
  • Fever -- up to 50 percent
  • Diarrhea -- up to 40 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 33 percent
  • Headache -- up to 10 percent
  • Shivering and chills -- up to 10 percent.
Other reported reactions included but were not limited to:
  • Backache
  • Joint swelling, aches, or pain
  • Flushing (a sudden warmth and redness of the face, neck, and chest)
  • Dizziness and fainting
  • Muscle aches, cramps, or pain
  • Vaginal pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Endometriosis (when cells from the lining of the womb grow in other areas of the body)
  • Vaginal inflammation or infection
  • Weakness
  • Nighttime leg cramps
  • A tear in the wall of the uterus
  • Breast tenderness
  • Blurred vision
  • Coughing
  • Rash
  • Stiff neck
  • Dehydration
  • Tremors
  • Tingling, pricking, burning, or numbness of the skin
  • Hearing problems
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Sore throat
  • Hoarseness
  • Sweating
  • Eye pain
  • Wheezing
  • An abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia)
  • Skin discoloration
  • Tension in the vaginal muscles.
