Prostin E2 Uses

How Does It Work?

Prostin E2 is a manufactured (synthetic) version of prostaglandin E2, a natural substance made by the body. Prostaglandin E2 is naturally secreted by the fetus and placenta during pregnancy. It plays an important role in the steps leading to labor by relaxing and softening the cervix to allow passage of the baby and increasing contractions. Like naturally occurring prostaglandin, Prostin E2 causes the uterus to contract and push out the contents of conception, including the fetus and placenta.

Is It Safe for Children to Use Prostin E2?

Prostin E2 has not been studied in children and is not approved for use in this age group. Talk to your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medication in females younger than 18 years old.

Off-Label Prostin E2 Uses

On occasion, healthcare providers may recommend medications for something other than the approved uses. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are no well-accepted off-label uses for Prostin E2.
