Provera Warnings and Precautions

Before taking Provera, let your healthcare provider know about any other medical issues you may have, including heart disease, a history of breast cancer, or migraine headaches. In addition, this medicine can cause drug interactions, so talk to your healthcare provider about your current medications. Precautions and warnings with Provera also apply to people with certain allergies and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

Talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking

Provera^® (medroxyprogesterone acetate) if you have:

Unexplained vaginal bleeding
Breast cancer or have ever had breast cancer
Estrogen- or progestin-dependent cancer
Had a stroke or heart attack in the past year
A history of blood clots
Heart disease
High blood pressure (hypertension)
High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia)
An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
Liver disease, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver failure
Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
Migraine headaches
Asthma
Seizures or epilepsy
Endometriosis
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus)
Low blood calcium levels
Diabetes
An upcoming surgery
Any allergies, including to foods, dyes, or preservatives.

Also, let your healthcare provider know if you:

Smoke cigarettes or use tobacco products
Are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant (see Provera and Pregnancy)
Are breastfeeding (see Provera and Breastfeeding).

You should also tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
