What Is Provera Used For?

Provera® (medroxyprogesterone acetate) is a prescription drug that contains a synthetic (manufactured) form of the female progesterone hormone. But what is Provera used for?
This medicine is approved for the treatment of amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods) in women who have not had a period for several months and for the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding caused by an imbalance of hormones. Provera is also approved for use in postmenopausal women to help prevent an overgrowth of the uterine lining, which can decrease the risk for uterine cancer.
Healthcare providers may also occasionally recommend this drug for "off-label," or unapproved, reasons. At this time, some of the off-label uses for Provera include the following:
