When in Your Menstrual Cycle Should You Start Taking Provera?

Women who are taking Provera® (medroxyprogesterone acetate) typically take the medication every day for a certain number of days, depending on the reason they are taking it. But when in your menstrual cycle should you start taking Provera?
If you are using Provera for treating abnormal vaginal bleeding, the medicine is usually started on day 16 or day 21 of the menstrual cycle and is taken for 5 to 10 days. When used in postmenopausal women, Provera is started on day 1 or day 16 of the menstrual cycle and is taken for 12 to 14 days.
This medication can also be used for treating amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods). It is taken for 5 to 10 days. Three to seven days after Provera is stopped, menstrual-like vaginal bleeding normally occurs.
