Sculptra is a type of facial filler used for several purposes, such as correcting facial fat loss, treating wrinkles, and filling in facial fold lines. This facial filler is injected by your healthcare provider and works by helping to stimulate the body to replace lost collagen. In some cases, several treatment sessions are necessary. Possible side effects include swelling, tenderness, and pain.
Sculptra® (injectable poly-L lactic acid) is a long-lasting facial filler. Unlike other facial fillers, Sculptra may actually help to stimulate the body to replace lost collagen, a protein that acts as a framework to support cells and tissues.
There are two Sculptra products:
- Regular Sculptra -- approved for correcting facial fat loss in people with HIV
- Sculptra Aesthetic -- approved for cosmetic uses, such as treating wrinkles and facial fold lines.
There are no significant differences between the two products.
Sculptra is manufactured by Dermik Laboratories.
Sculptra works differently than more traditional fillers. Instead of just "filling in" the lines or sunken areas, Sculptra actually stimulates the body to make new collagen. This product contains tiny poly-L lactic acid (PLLA) beads. Over time, the PLLA beads break down and stimulate the body to make new collagen, which also improves the look of wrinkles and lines.
Although an immediate "filling" result is seen, this diminishes over the first 24 hours as the liquid portion of the injection is absorbed into the body. The more long-lasting results are seen much more gradually (over weeks or months).
