What Is Sculptra?

If you have facial fat loss, wrinkles, or fold lines, a healthcare provider may recommend Sculptra® (injectable poly-L lactic acid). But what is Sculptra and how does it work?
There are two Sculptra products available -- regular Sculptra (used to correct facial fat loss in people with HIV) and Sculptra Aesthetic (used for cosmetic purposes, such as treating wrinkles and fold lines). Other than having different approved uses, there are no significant differences between the two products.
Both of these products work by stimulating the body to replace lost collagen. Clinical studies have shown that injections of Sculptra are effective for up to 25 months.
Although many people do not have any problems while using this facial filler, Sculptra can cause side effects, such as swelling, tenderness, and pain. If negative reactions do occur, they tend to be mild and easily treated.
(Click Sculptra for more information on what Sculptra is and how it works. This article also provides details on additional side effects and some safety precautions to be aware of before beginning treatment.)
