Generic Seasonique

The oral contraceptive Seasonique is now available in generic form. The generic version is sold under the names Amethia and Camrese. The FDA has assigned Amethia an "AB" rating, which means the drug is considered to be equivalent to Seasonique. Camrese is an "authorized generic," which means it is exactly the same as the name-brand drug, except for its packaging and labeling.

Brand-name Seasonique is made by Duramed Pharmaceuticals, Inc., for Teva Pharmaceuticals USA. It is also available in generic form.

Availability of Generic Seasonique

Generic Seasonique is sold under the names

Amethia™ and Camrese™. For birth control pills, generic manufacturers almost always choose to give the medications their own brand-like names, mostly to avoid confusion among the many very similar (but different) generic birth control pills.

Amethia is made by Patheon, Inc., for Watson Laboratories, Inc. Camrese is made by Duramed Pharmaceuticals, Inc., for Teva Pharmaceuticals USA. Notice that the manufacturer for Camrese is the same as for brand-name Seasonique. This is because Camrese is an "authorized generic," meaning that it is exactly the same as the brand-name drug in every way, except that it is packaged and labeled as a generic. The tablets are identical, the manufacturer is the same, but the name of the medication is different.

Like Seasonique, Amethia and Camrese come in one strength, containing 0.15 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.03 mg of ethinyl estradiol per active tablet (the first 84 tablets). The last seven tablets contain 0.01 mg of ethinyl estradiol per tablet, but no levonorgestrel.
