Thyroid USP Shortages

Many people have been frustrated to find that this medication (as well as other similar products) has been difficult, if not impossible, to obtain lately. The manufacturer of Armour Thyroid states that there is a shortage of the raw materials used to make the drug, and the maker of Nature-Throid and Westhroid state that they are experiencing shortages due to increased demand. In addition, all of the generic thyroid USP products have been discontinued by their manufacturers.
Some people have resorted to splitting higher-strength tablets, which were available for a longer time than the lower strengths, although the tablets are difficult to split accurately without crumbling.
The manufacturers of Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid, and Westhroid do not know when this medication will again become reliably available. Until then, discuss your other treatment options with your healthcare provider.
**October 2010 Update** All strengths of Armour Thyroid and Nature-Throid are once again available. The ½-grain, 1-grain, and 2-grain strengths of Westhroid are now available.
