An underactive thyroid produces less thyroid hormone than normal. This condition, called hypothyroidism, can be caused by illness, radiation treatment, surgery, or even a congenital condition. Because the thyroid gland plays a role in so many different areas of the body, symptoms, too, vary from person to person. Possible signs include fatigue, joint pain, weight gain, and decreased sweating.
