Drug Interactions With Viorele

If barbiturates, protease inhibitors, or certain seizure medications are taken with Viorele, drug interactions could occur. These may increase your chance of pregnancy or increase your risk of developing side effects. Other medicines that may react negatively with Viorele include cyclosporine, certain antibiotics, modafinil, and aprepitant, just to name a few.


An Introduction to Viorele Drug Interactions

Viorele™ (desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol), which is a generic version of Mircette®, can potentially interact with numerous other medicines. Many of these interactions can be severe enough to lead to unintentional pregnancy.
Some of the drugs that may lead to Viorele interactions include:
  • Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren®)
  • Antibiotics
  • Aprepitant (Emend®)
  • Atorvastatin (Lipitor®) or combination medications that contain atorvastatin (Caduet®, Liptruzet™)
  • Barbiturate medications, such as:
    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
