Because a deficiency of vitamin B12 can be disastrous and because an excess intake of the vitamin is rarely dangerous, it is a good idea for almost all pregnant women to take vitamin B12 through a prenatal vitamin. Women at risk for severe deficiencies, such as strict vegetarians, should talk with their healthcare providers about any testing and treatments they may need. For such women, it is ideal to correct any problems and restore the body's supply of this vitamin before conception.
