Copper IUD Birth Control Information

The copper IUD (ParaGard®) is a contraceptive prescribed to prevent pregnancy in women of reproductive age. This device is inserted into the uterus and can be left in place for up to 10 to 12 years.
You will not feel the device in your body. However, you will be able to feel the removal threads at your cervix (the top of your vagina). Do not pull on the threads, as this could dislodge the device.
Because the copper IUD may not be the best birth control option for all women, your healthcare provider will need information on your medical history. If you have had problems with pelvic infections, an ectopic pregnancy, or an abnormally shaped uterus, you may not be able to safely use this product.
