Yaz Drug Interactions

If you are taking Yaz, it is important to know that certain medications (such as antibiotics or NSAIDs) may cause interactions with Yaz. Drug interactions such as these can make the birth control pill less effective, increasing your chance of pregnancy. Some of these Yaz drug interactions can also alter the amount of the medications in your blood, perhaps increasing your risk of side effects.

 

An Introduction to Yaz Drug Interactions

Yaz® (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol) can potentially interact with several other medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to Yaz drug interactions include:
 
  • ACE inhibitors, such as:
 
 
  • Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren®)
  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), such as:
 
 
 
    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
 
  • Certain seizure medications, such as:
 
 
  • Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
  • Heparin
  • Modafinil (Provigil®)
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as:
 
 
  • Potassium products, such as:
 
    • Potassium chloride (K-Dur®, Klor-Con®, Micro-K®)
    • Potassium citrate (Urocit-K®, Polycitra-K®)
    • Potassium gluconate
    • Potassium phosphate (Neutra-Phos-K®, K-Phos®)
    • Salt substitutes (used to flavor food)
 
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics, such as:

 

 
  • Protease inhibitors, such as:
